Many people find that they do not get all the nutrients they need in a normal balanced diet. The right supplements can make you feel really alive, with energy and enthusiasm for life.
Eating wrong contributes to the development of type 2 diabetes. Eating right is needed to control the disease. All the medication in the world will fail if we keep filling our bodies with the wrong foods.
Many foods have beneficial effects on certain diseases, but in the U.S. it can be dangerous to advertise these effects. Federal law defines as a "drug" any substance that is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. And "drugs" are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Recently the FDA went after the cherry growers for publicizing the effect of cherries and cherry juice on gout.
Have you ever noticed the disclaimer on most nutritional supplements? A standard form is: "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease."
Natural substances (foods, herbs, etc.) cannot be patented, so there is no financial incentive for the pharmaceutical companies to investigate them or to spend the money necessary to get them through the FDA approval process. The patentable drugs that do get approved all have side effects, most of which require another drug to treat. . and another . . and another . . . . . .
In the Cranky Yankee Weekly Newsletter (see the Home page for subscription information) I've been running a series on "drugs"--the natural substances that treat various conditions without side effects.(According to the FDA definition, water could be a drug because it treats dehydration.) Isn't that ridiculous?
